#3 Manchester United: 18 points (1999-00)
Manchester United dominated the nineties under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson. After a historic Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble in the previous campaign, Manchester United lifted the title in the 1999-00 season for the sixth time in eight years.
The Red Devils ended the season on 91 points, 18 more than Arsenal, who finished in second. United scored 97 goals, which was a league record at the time. Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole scored 20 and 19 goals, respectively and led United’s successful title defense. David Beckham had 15 assists in the season, which was the best in the league.
Manchester United were at their peak during this period, dominating the English top flight with peerless ease. The Red Devils have won the title 20 times, which is a league record. Based on their current form, fans can only hope some miracle can bring back United’s glory days.
#2 Liverpool: 18 Points (2019-20)
Since his arrival in 2015, Jurgen Klopp has transformed Liverpool and made them one of the best sides in world football. The Reds have arguably been the only side that has matched Manchester City stride for stride in the past few seasons.
Liverpool’s 2019-20 season was record-breaking. The Reds reached 30 league wins in just 34 games, faster than any team in Premier League history. They finished the season with an incredible 99 points. Manchester City had several slip-ups that season and finished in second place with 81 points. The prolific Mohamed Salah was the Reds' leading goalscorer with 19 goals.
At one point in the season, Liverpool had a massive 25-point lead, the biggest ever in English top-flight history. The Reds won the league at a canter with seven games to spare, which is also a league record. Liverpool are currently nine points behind City but still have an outside chance of catching up with them.
#1 Manchester City: 19 points (2017-18)
Manchester City made history in the 2017-18 season when they reached triple figures in the points table. City finished the season on 100 points, 19 more than second-placed Manchester United. The closest Pep Guardiola had previously come to a century of points was in the 2009-10 La Liga season with Barcelona (99 points).
13 different players scored for City and they amassed 106 goals in total, which is more than any other side in league history. Club legend Sergio Aguero was City’s leading goalscorer with 21 goals. Kevin De Bruyne won the 2017-18 'Playmaker of the Season' award in its introductory year with 16 assists.
It is safe to say that this City team was one of the greatest the Premier League has witnessed. City were unstoppable both home and away and set the record for most away points in a season with 50 points.
We will undoubtedly witness many exceptional teams in the future, but for them to replicate the Centurions’ achievements will be close to impossible.
