Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney lauded the performance of veteran team-mate Ryan Giggs in United’s 5-0 thumping of Bayer Leverkusen, admitting that he had run out of superlatives about the Welsh midfielder. Rooney also praised the performance of Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa, on a night that he described as “the perfect away performance.”
Giggs rolled back the years to ease Manchester United’s midfield worries, a matter of days before his 40th birthday, leaving Rooney to marvel at his longevity: ”I’ve run out of things to say about Ryan.
“Actually, during the game, the Bayer centre-half was asking how he is still playing at that age.
“I certainly won’t be playing at that age, that’s for sure. His composure on the ball is great.”
On Kagawa, who returned to Germany last night, Rooney continued:
“Shinji is a fantastic footballer so it’s great for us. He hasn’t played much football but came in tonight and played superbly. It’s great to have players fighting for the positions.
Rooney laid on three assists for his team-mates as United put in their best performance for some time, and while he was satisfied with such a contribution he insisted that attention quickly moves onto their next league fixture- against Tottenham.
“It’s a team game but it’s always great when you can help your team-mates score goals. It was a perfect away match.”
“We played very well, we defended well, there was some great counter-attacking football, we played with power, pace and composure.”
“It was really as good an away performance as you can get.”
“Obviously, it was disappointing to lose a goal towards the end at Cardiff [on Sunday]. We didn’t play as well as we can.”
“So, whilst we are all delighted to put on a great performance in the Champions League, now we are looking forward to playing Spurs.”
Giggs made 91% of his passes last night, including three key passes.
