‘Fergie time’, this is how injury time is commonly known in England whenThe Red Devils are in the hunt of a late goal. Once reached this point, Manchester United attackers become even more lethal, as uncountable times have been capable of getting United out of trouble with a last-ditch effort. New signing Robin van Persie did it again at Southampton a few days ago, so it’s a good time to remember, with a smile in our face, the best ‘Fergie time’ goals ever, not in terms of ability or difficulty but importance and emotion:
Federico Macheda, United 3 Aston Villa 2, Premier League, 5th April 2009Michael Owen, United 4 Manchester City 3, Premier League, 20th September 2009Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United 2 Bayern München 1, Champions League, 26th May 1999Steve Bruce, United 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1, Premier League, 10th April 1993Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United 2 Liverpool 1, FA Cup, 24thJanuary 1999Wayne Rooney, United 3 Manchester City 1 (4-3 on aggregate), League Cup, 27th January 2010Robin van Persie, Southampton 2 United 3, Premier League, 2nd September 2012Nemanja Vidi?, United 1 Sunderland 0, Premier League, 6th December 2008John O’Shea, Liverpool 0 United 1, Premier League, 3rd March 2007Rio Ferdinand, United 1 Liverpool 0, Premier League, 22nd January 2006
It’s worth bearing in mind that only those goals scored on injury-time have been included. As a result, some very touching and remarkable ones, which all United supporters will fondly have in their thoughts haven’t been taken into consideration. Some notorious examples are Eric Cantona’s strike at the 1996 FA Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley, Ryan Giggs’ unstoppable run and wonderful left-footed shot at the 1999 FA Cup semifinal against Arsenal at Villa Park and Cristiano Ronaldo’s powerful run and right footed shot at Crave Cottage in the road to a 16th Premier League championship.
Norwegian ‘Super sub’ and legend Ole Gunnar Solskajer had a lovely penchant for netting crucial goals for Manchester United coming off the bench. Nowadays, he has been taken over by Mexican goal poacher Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, who made an instant impact at Old Trafford by scoring a string of late winners in his first term as a United player (1-0 win at Valencia, 2-1 win at Stoke City and 1-0 win at home against Everton), although none of them was scored on real ‘Fergie time’, so none of them feature on the above list.
Have your say. Please tell us your favourite ‘Fergie Time’ goals ever.
