Former Ajax defender Rob Wielaert on Wednesday signed for Australian club Melbourne Heart, joining a growing list of off-season recruits which also includes Harry Kewell.
The 34-year-old has also played with top Dutch clubs PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente and Heart coach John Aloisi said he would add some crucial experience to the back line.
“Wielaert has superb pedigree and his experience at the top level is very impressive,” Aloisi said.
“He is a smart footballer and will be an excellent organiser of the team from the back.”
Heart missed out on the A-League playoffs last season and released several senior players to rebuild the squad.
Wielaert joins other European footballers who have migrated to Australia in the twilight of their playing careers. Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero joined Sydney FC last season, scoring 14 goals in 24 appearances and injecting a dose of star power into the league.
