AC Milan have officially announced the appointment of Clarence Seedorf as their new head coach following the sacking of Massimilano Allegri.

Allegri was sacked on Monday after a shock 4-3 loss to relegation battling Sassuolo which left the 7-time Champions League winners 20 points off the qualification spots for next year’s tournament.

Seedorf, who played for the Italian side for 10 years from 2002, had ended his playing career earlier this week and announced his intention to take over managerial duties at his former club. Seedorf has signed a two-and-half-year contract with Milan which will run up to June 2016.

The Dutchman was in the stands to watch Milan secure a convincing 3-1 win over Serie B outfit Spezia on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia. The former midfielder has now put pen to paper which officially confirms his return to Milan as the head coach.

Seedorf will take over managerial duties with immediate effect as he attempts to salvage some pride from a season in which the 18-time Italian champions have almost nothing to play for. He also becomes the first African origin manager to become the Milan boss.
