Secret Agent 007 has another secret up his sleeve. He was offered a Manchester United contract at the age of 23!
Connery was a keen footballer and had played for Bonnyrigg Rose in his younger days. Due to his superb skills, he was offered a trial with Scottish second division club, East Fife. While on tour with the club in the South Pacific, he played in a match which was watched by then United manager, Matt Busby. According to Connery’s wikipedia page, he was offered a £25 a week deal at United.
Connery admits that he was tempted to sign the contract but then realized that he was 23 and players usually retire in their 30′s which would have given him only about 7 years of football. So, he decided to reject the deal and go ahead with his passion for acting.
In hindsight, it seems like a good decision. He went on to become a top class actor or else, who knows; he may have just given United “the license to kill”!
