According to reports, Sunderland player Adam Johnson has been released on bail after being questioned by the police over allegations of sleeping with a minor girl. However, the England international has been suspended by his club pending the outcome of the investigation.
Johnson was arrested on Monday, after being allegedly involved in sexual activities with a 15-year-old.
The rules state that it is illegal to sleep with a person who is under the age of 16.
The police released the following statement:
“A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16.
He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their inquiries.”
Johnson has represented England 12 times and has had spells at Middlesbrough and Manchester City in the Premier League.
