FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has insisted that he won’t be quitting the Spanish national team despite getting booed by fans but not before taking another dig at the Real Madrid supporters, as stated on the club’s official website.
The 28-year-old called an impromptu press conference on Thursday to address the recent controversies involving him as he was jeered by the home supporters recently during Spain’s 2-0 victory over Slovakia. The crowd didn’t even spare him during an opening training session last week as he was booed by the attending crowd.
"Quitting the national team is the last thing I would do. That would be giving in to those who whistle for the wrong reasons," said Pique.
"When I play at the Bernabeu, I expect to get whistled, but not for the national team as it impacts on us all and affects the group.
The Catalan defender has also been criticised for his support for a referendum on Catalan independence and want him excluded from the Spain team on those grounds. However, Pique is adamant that he won’t change his feelings about Madrid while also stating that he wishes the worst for the Spanish rivals.
"I'm proud of being a part of this Barça generation that won so much and during which Madrid didn't win much.
"I think they whistle me because of Barça-Madrid rivalry, but I won't change. I'll always want things to go bad for Madrid. I wore a Buffon shirt during the Champions League semi final [last season] and always want Madrid to lose. That's the way the Madrid-Barça rivalry is," added Pique.
Pique defends his taunts at Ronaldo during Barca’s La Liga celebrations
Pique also refused to apologise for his taunts around Colombian singer Kevin Roldan, whose party was attended by Cristiano Ronaldo and several Real players just before the weekend on which Barca sealed last season's La Liga title.
At Barca's victory celebrations at the Nou Camp, Pique shouted to the crowd of Barca fans: "We are the best team in the world! Thanks to all and thanks to Kevin Roldan, it all started with you."
On that topic, the former Manchester United defender commented,"I know the Kevin Roldan comment wasn't elegant but I feel proud of what we've won with this club."
When asked about Ramos, he said, "Our relationship now is better than it has been at any time since I made by debut with the national team. It was a little cold to start with, but the other night 10 or 11 of us got together in Iker [Casillas]' room and Sergio and I spoke about lots of things."
The controversial comments made by Ramos earlier this week were interpreted by some as hanging Pique out to dry, but the Catalan centre-back stated, "He defended me before the game. Then in the mixed zone things go quickly and you say whatever. We get on really well. He's a great player and I feel very comfortable playing alongside him."
