With the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this month, doubts were raised over Marcus Rashford and his place in the starting eleven.
In the favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, Romelu Lukaku will no doubt lead the striker's role when fit, with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic occupying the midfield berths.
Sanchez will certainly play in 1 of the 3 attacking positions behind Lukaku. This means the likes of Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Rashford himself having to compete for the remaining 2 attacking slots.
So will the Sanchez signing hamper the youngster's growth at Old Trafford? Many-a-times, Rashford has been Mourinho's go-to guy this season, but, in the Chilean, United now have a player who fans expect to produce moments of magic when needed.
With few urging the young attacker to quit United in order to play week-in and week-out, here is why Rashford should stay, learn and fight for his place in the team.
Rashford will learn a thing or two from the experienced Alexis. The 29-year-old had 3 seasons at Barcelona before making over 100 appearances for Arsenal where he was the focal point of the Gunners' attack.
With three-and-a-half years of proven experience in the Premier League, Sanchez can be an influential figure for the likes of Rashford and other United youngsters around him.
Sanchez was awarded the Man-of-The-Match award for his 72 minute cameo against Yeovil last week with Rashford also getting on the scoresheet.
With Anthony Martial and Lingard on form, Rashford would no doubt be desperate to prove his worth to Mourinho who also has Juan Mata as an additional option.
Mourinho has reportedly ordered the Chilean’s locker to be placed between Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard. According to The Sun, An Old Trafford insider said:
“The gaffer is always looking for an edge. Jose likes players of all ages to be able to mix.
“It doesn’t seem a coincidence that Alexis’ new locker is right in the middle where Marcus and Jesse Lingard sit.
“There is also a feeling behind the scenes that Alexis can now take Rashford to another level"
With this step, Mourinho certainly sees his New No 7. as someone who can help mentor Rashford on and off the pitch.
With his wealth of experience at the top level, Sanchez will certainly guide the young English players who came through the ranks at Old Trafford.
Rashford should let his performances speak for themselves and not let the ex-Barcelona winger decide his fortunes at United. It may well turn out to be the most significant season for the young England ace.
