Lionel Messi's former Argentina teammate Sergio Aguero once took a dig at Cristiano Ronaldo, saying Messi is a better goalscorer than him. His comments came shortly after Messi broke Ronaldo's record for the most number of goals scored in European football in April 2023, while still playing for Paris St-Germain.

While watching a compilation of Messi and Ronaldo's best goals during a live stream on Twitch in April 2023, Aguero said Ronaldo depended on free-kicks and "pure luck" to score.

"Come on. All free-kick goals and pure luck. Messi's are all at the angle, stupid. But what does [Ronaldo] do? Goalkeeper's fault. I think Raul has better goals, [Karim] Benzema I think he has better ones," the former striker said (quoted via Medio Tiempo).

Aguero reiterated that among Messi's top goals, he "dribbled past five players" in at least 15 of them, but most of Ronaldo's goals were free-kicks.

"How many free-kick goals were shown? Out of the top 20, Ronaldo's 15 were free-kicks. In Messi's top 20 goals, in 15 of them, he dribbled past five players," Sergio said.

The former striker's comments came after Messi scored his 702nd goal in Europe in Ligue 1 during PSG's 2-0 win against Nice.

Sergio Aguero added that one of Cristiano Ronaldo's most popular goals, a 40-yard strike against Porto in 2009, happened due to "a mistake by the goalkeeper." Ronaldo notably won the FIFA Puskas Award for the same goal.

Aguero has been close friends with Lionel Messi since they were teammates in the Argentina youth team. La Pulga is also the godfather of Aguero's son Benjamin.

While Messi currently plays for the MLS club Inter Miami, Aguero retired from professional football in 2021, owing to his heart problems.

Sergio Aguero has always been vocal about his support for Lionel Messi. In April 2022, when Cristiano Ronaldo was still playing for Manchester United, Argentine superstar Alejandro Garnacho hailed the Portuguese superstar as the "greatest of all time."

Garnacho's comments came after Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Norwich City to give United a much-needed victory in the Premier League. Garnacho posted a picture of the two on Instagram, with the caption "Greatest of all times…Dream big, guys."

Sergio Aguero was quick to reply to the post, saying:

"Only because you still haven’t played with the best yet." (Translated from Spanish via Instagram)

Aguero also tagged his friend Lionel Messi in his comment on Garnacho's post. Garnacho, who has always hailed Ronaldo as his idol, did not respond to Aguero's comment. The comment is currently unavailable under the post.

Garnacho plays for the Argentina national team alongside Messi.
