Spain has undoubtedly been the best team in recent years by a long distance. Since the 2008 Euros, they have been unstoppable on the international circuit as they achieved a treble of success which includes back to back Euros (2008 and 2012) with a maiden World Cup win in 2010.

The credit of their success is due to a squad of world class quality that boasts of players like Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, Ramos and many others. But one thing that is worth mentioning while talking about Spain’s rise to power is the style of play that made them a dominating force in world football.

That style originated from the roots of La Masia; in other words, FC Barcelona.

The club has provided exceptional players that have shaped the modern day La Rojas squad. Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets have carried their club education and utilised it for the nation generating great results. Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets return at the heart of Spain’s midfield while Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba have been handed over the responsibilities at the back. Cesc Fabregas and Pedro also resume their role in the squad.

Although criticized for not fulfilling his price tag, Alex Song still gets his chance to play for Cameroon at the tournament.

Pressure of delivering the trophy as the host nation will be on for Brazil which would mean that Neymar and Dani Alves will have to play their roles to perfection in order to fulfill Scolari’s objectives.

Lionel Messi will be looking to stamp his authority as the best player in the world as he leads the forward line for Argentina and accompanying him at the centre of midfield will be Javier Mascherano.

Messi’s Barcelona striking partner Alexis Sanchez will play a pivotal role for Chile in the competition.
