Maddy’s Note: I had written this just before the finals of the World Cup between the Dutch and the Spaniards. Paul the legend since, has passed on. The memories however will last forever. RIP Paul
There was once an Octopus named Paul,
Who sensationally predicted Argentina’s fall,
All hungry Paulie wanted was his dinner,
Astoundingly, though he always picked the winner.
–
Paulie became one of the latest Internet sensations,
Unwittingly causing collective gloom of Nations,
Some said Paulie was the new Messiah,
Yet there were those who called him a Pariah.
–
His faithful had in him the utmost belief,
And even most skeptics secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
The superstitious punters though, made hundreds of quid,
Odds be damned, they trusted the Squid,
–
His predictions have been broadcast live,
Alas! They’ve just stirred up a bee hive,
He’s received many a death threat,
Still, the tentacled tipster does not fret.
–
When Paulie said Die Mannschaft’s cup will come to naught,
The whole of Deutschland’s nerves were fraught,
Yes, against Spain they may have rated a Zero,
Still, the Octopus is and shall remain a National Hero.
–
One more game Paulie has to call,
Who oh who is he setting up for the fall,
Will it be for the Dutch, heartache much?
Or will it be dull pain for Spain?
–
Of Paulie’s future there is much speculation,
Will he end up as main course in Sushi Nation?
One thing’s for sure. If to cook him, someone tries,
In Paulie’s defense, loyal supporters will rise.
–
That’s the story of Paul the Octopus.
