December last year saw Andre Villas-Boas getting the sack from Tottenham Hotspur after a dismal 5-0 defeat to Liverpool. However currently, the Portuguese is experiencing a change of fortune as manager of Russian outfit Zenit St. Petersburg.
On Saturday, Zenit recorded their 6th win of the season after easing past visitors Volga Nizhny Novgorod with a scoreline of 2-0. This six-in-six victory meant that AVB had gone on a 100% winning streak since taking over the job from ousted Italian coach Luciano Spaletti. Prior to AVB’s accomplishment, no manager in Russia has ever begun their managerial campaign in Russia by achieving 6 consecutive victories.
“It’s a very important win for us,” Villas-Boas said.
“Volga defended well today but we managed to overcome their defence to score twice. Now we need to win two more matches to secure the Russian title.”
Zenit now tops the table with 59 points with 3 more matches left to play until the end of the season. The team’s remaining fixtures are against Locomotiv Moskva, Dinamo Moskva and Kuban’ Krasnodar.
