Argentine defender Marcos Rojo believes his compatriot Angel Di Maria is one of the best players at Manchester United and has backed him to find his form next season. The former Benfica star was signed by the Red Devils in the summer of 2014 in a £59.7 million deal from Spanish giants Real Madrid that made him the most expensive signing in British football.
After a brilliant start for his new club, his form nosedived in subsequent matches as he eventually endured a frustrating debut season at Old Trafford. In total, he made 32 appearances for the club and scored 4 goals.
Marcos Rojo himself had an injury-plagued debut season with the Red Devils and had only 22 appearances for his club in the league, playing at both centre-back and left-back for Louis van Gaal.
"For me, the player with the most talent at Manchester United is Angel. There are great players at the club but Angel, for me, is one of the best in the team and in the world,” Rojo told the Copa America official website.
Rojo, who also joined the club last summer from Sporting Lisbon for £16 million, feels Di Maria took some time to adapt to his new surroundings and is now finally ready to prove his critics wrong.
“It has been a difficult year for him. He had some problems adapting, but that's normal. Any player coming to a new country and a new league has to adapt to the differences and that's what happens, but I'm sure he will do really well in the months ahead,'' he told the media, as reported by the Copa America website.
The pair are currently playing for Argentina in the Copa America where they have reached the finals after thrashing Paraguay 6-1 in the second semi-final. The pair were instrumental in the win as Marcos Rojo scored the opening goal for La Albiceleste while Di Maria scored two goals and provided an assist They will now meet host nation Chile in the finals which will be held on the 4th of July.
Rojo full of praise for Real Madrid target David de Gea
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who has only one year left on his deal, has bee strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid throughout the summer and his club teammate Rojo has lavished praise on the former Atletico Madrid star.
“If David is not the best goalkeeper in the world today, then he is very close. He has adapted really well to the Premier League this past year,” said Rojo, according to the official Copa America website.
