Radamel Falcao’s move to Manchester United on deadline day was shocking to say the least. After having been linked to Real Madrid all summer and briefly with Manchester City, the 28-year-old finally signed for the Old Trafford-based side.
The former Atletico forward and hs agent Jorge Mendes were so confident about the Madrid move that the player allegedly even posted a tweet. It was later denied by him as fake though.
While many are guessing the reason as to why Falcao’s move to Spain fell through, El Confidencial seems to have a theory to explain it and it involves Angel di Maria.
United’s £59.7 million winger Angel di Maria, also a Jorge Mendes client may have had a part to play in the turnaround.
The Argentine wrote an Open Letter to the Los Blancos fans explaining why he had to leave the club and taking a dig at the directors.
After winning La Decima, I went to the World Cup expecting to receive a gesture from the directors, which never came. Many things were said and many lies were spoken. They always wanted to attribute the reason for leaving on me, but that was never the case.
Unfortunately, I am not a footballer like another person. The only thing I asked for is for something fair. There are many things I value and salary is not one of them.
I hope to get them at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world and I wish to make history.
The club bought World Cup Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez in the summer inspite of having the former Benfica winger already in their ranks.
The letter seemed to infuriate the Madrid hierarchy who decided not to sign a Jorge Mendes player in principle in the window. This is where the English club swooped in on the opportunity of signing the forward.
When asked about why the club didn’t sign the Colombian striker, President Florentino Perez came up with a sharp reply.
“If I’d brought Radamel Falcao, we might as well make Jorge Mendes president of Real Madrid,”
It will be interesting to see how this battle between Perez and Mendes pans out especially with the agent having Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabio Coentrao, James Rodriguez, Pepe as his clients.
