A Spanish football club has signed Ankit Sharma, a young footballer from Delhi for the 2011-12 season. Ankit becomes the 5th Indian to be signed by a foreign football club, the other four being Mohammed Salim, Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil chhetri and Varin Mehta. Ankit’s club Club Deportivo San Cristobal Football is a lower division club in Spain. This is a big news for Indian football fans, as Spain is currently the world champions, the exposure will mean a lot for the young footballer, who previously played for Hindustan Auronaticals Limited(HAL). In the I-league, he came into action towards the second phase of the tournament for the HAL, but suddenly made an impact on the field.
He is a product of DDA Academy, which is known for competative football and professional football. He has also played cricket for DDCA, and school team.
Ankit has already represented India in Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 level. He has a good experience in Junior International level, which will definitely help him to perform his best at his new club. This Spanish club plays in Group 3 of Primera Aficionados in the Community of Madrid, which is level 6 in Spanish football pyramid. The club is not a big one but it has produced young prospering talent like Real madrid’s legend Raul Gonzales.
The signing is not a big one, given the current status of the Club, but will give a new direction to other young Indian Footballers. Both Bhaichung Bhutia and Sunil Chhetri set the pace for the generation X to follow.
Interestingly, he is also pursuing one of the toughest course in the country which is BA(h) economics (telling you from my own experience) from Delhi University in the Moti Lal Nehru College. SportsKeeda wishes him luck for the future.
