Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has revealed that he is not concerned with who will be in charge of Manchester United next season. The Frenchman shrugged off reports linking Jose Mourinho to the Old Trafford hotseat, maintaining that he still has to repay current Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal for his faith.
In a wide-ranging interview with France Football, Martial revealed that rumours of Mourinho to United do not concern him, saying “As long as the current coach is there, I don't think about it. If Mourinho must arrive, he will arrive. For the moment the coach is still there.”
Multiple eyebrows were raised when Manchester United spent £36 million to prise Martial away from AS Monaco, given the youngster’s lack of first team football. However, Martial has enjoyed a relatively promising start to his United career, scoring 13 times in 40 appearances, the last of which was the winner when United defeated Everton 1-0.
Yet, Martial still considers that he has much to do to repay Louis van Gaal's faith, saying “Every coach has their good and bad sides. Van Gaal has given me a lot of confidence and I try hard to pay it back to him every day.”
Martial revelling in first Premier League season
The Frenchman’s move from Ligue 1 to the Premier League was expected to be a bumpy ride, but Martial revealed that he is having a blast in his first Premier League season, describing the goal he scored against Liverpool as ‘probably the most important moment of my career’.
Playing in the Manchester derby was also another of Martial's dreams, with the Frenchman saying “I'm having a blast. I love this league -- it's the one I always wanted. Take for example the Manchester derby. Every footballer dreams of playing in this type of match.”
“There were nothing but good players on the pitch. Everyone gave their all. In addition, there was a victory at the end.”
The rise of Marcus Rashford has taken some of the spotlight away from Martial, but the Frenchman revealed he’s happy for his teammate, saying “Marcus [Rashford] has benefited from the injuries of other players to get some game time. The manager gave him a chance, and he took it.”
“He’s played really well, and already has five goals. I’m happy for him. When I played as a nine, sometimes I didn’t score. I hope Marcus will continue to score and help us win.”
