Manchester United star Anthony Martial has revealed that he prefers not to invest more of his time in the gym as he fears that bulking up could compromise on his strengths while developing as a player.

The France international has admitted that his primary focus is to tone his muscle and that is one of the main reasons he looks to avoid weight training while he is in the gym.

"In truth, I don’t really enjoy doing weights in the gym too much – I don’t do an awful lot of it, really. I do a little bit just for muscle tone more than anything, but not a huge amount," Martial told United's official website.

"I’m wary that if I do a lot of gym work, I might bulk up too much and lose that agility, so I try to limit what I do and simply do some strengthening of my abdominal muscles."

Martial moved to Old Trafford from AS Monaco in the final weeks of last summer. Since joining the 20-time English champions, he has been one of their standout players in the 2015/16 season, along with David de Gea, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling.

So far, the forward has netted 13 times in all competitions this term, which includes eight goals in the Premier League. He is delighted with his development at the club but has vowed to improve his goal scoring abilities for the upcoming campaign.

"On a personal level, it’s gone reasonably well. There are occasions when I could have done better: I could have been more clinical, scored more goals and made more assists. Now it’s down to me to keep going so I can help the team as much as I possibly can," he said.

Louis van Gaal has been subjected to heavy criticism from the majority of the United fans, former players and even TV pundits throughout the course of the season for his style of play, team selections and for poor results.

However, Martial was quick to praise the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager. The 20-year-old thanked the Dutchman for providing him the opportunity to feature regularly in all competitions.

"It’s not something I’d really expected, but it has been very important for my development," the Frenchman explained.

"The boss has shown a lot of faith in me and the fact he’s played me in so many games has allowed me to make progress and come on as a player."
