Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has expressed his gratitude to the club’s supporters for helping him settle down at Old Trafford, in an exclusive interview with Foot Locker. The French forward has hailed the atmosphere in the club’s home stadium as ‘unique’ and he is glad to see the fans happy with his performances this season.
The 20-time English champions acquired the services of the 19-year-old from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco for a hefty price tag during summer and with that came huge expectations from everyone at the club. But the French teenager showed fearlessness right from day one and grabbed headlines on his debut against rivals Liverpool, where he scored the third goal in the dying minutes of the second half.
Martial has made a promising start to his Red Devils career, scoring five goals in 14 games and he also managed to bag the Premier League’s player of the month award in September. Many had suggested that the former Monaco forward would struggle in the early stages of the campaign, but he has proved his critics wrong with his stand-out performances on many occasions.
Fans at Old Trafford give you extra energy: Martial
The France international has now admitted that he has settled into life in England and has hailed the Old Trafford faithful for their support during the transition.
“When I get onto the pitch, I block everything out and I really focus on the pitch,” he said. “It's like the stadium is empty and I'm really focused on my team and the opposing team.
“The best thing about playing football is making fans happy. The supporters help us a lot out on the pitch,” he explained.
“The atmosphere at Old Trafford is really unique and when you're a bit tired, they really help you, they shout out your name and that gives you extra energy. It's also because of them that I've adapted easily to Manchester.”
Martial picks goal against Liverpool as ‘greatest’ in United shirt
When asked about his greatest goal scored so far in the famous red shirt, the United starlet picked the obvious and admitted that ‘it made his name in the team.’
“I think the greatest goal I've ever scored is the one against Liverpool,” he revealed.
“It was amazing for me and it really made my name in the Manchester team.”
Martial names his three favourite players
The French teenager also spoke about his footballing idols and he has named three legends of the game – the Brazillian Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and his compatriot Zinedine Zidane as his favourite players.
“My three favourite players were Ronaldo, the Brazillian, Ronaldinho and Zinedine Zidane,” he added.
“Because they’re players beautiful to watch play and they’re the ones who made me want to play football.”
