Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has warned their Premier League rivals that the champions will still put up a strong fight even in the absence of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferdinand said that they couldn’t have found a better manager than David Moyes to continue the successful legacy that Ferguson left behind when he retired from football.

He added that when Fergie bowed off after 26 years of experience with the club, it didn’t make them weaker but instead opened up a new chapter for the Red Devils.

“I just think the appointment of David Moyes signals longevity,” said Ferdinand.

“David Moyes is determined, he’s winner and you can see that his teams have a real identity about them in terms of the way they play. There’s also an intensity about the way he is as a person. Whenever I’ve met him I’ve been struck by that and I think he’ll be a great addition to the club.

While delivering his farewell speech after his final game as the manger of the United, Fergie convinced the players to give their new boss the support he requires.

Ferguson himself had to overcome few years of difficulty, when he started out as the team’s manager, before welcoming two decades of consistent successes.

Ferdinand, who turned down lucrative offers that gave him a chance to play in Russia, Qatar and China in favor of extending his contract with the club, said that Moyes will be respected by the players who will learn to adapt themselves to the new boss’s tactics.

“It would be naive to think the new manager will come in and everything will change -dramatically in one fell swoop.”

“He’ll change things over the course of time and a club like United has a proven history of giving managers a chance to do that,” Ferdinand said.
