Are Barcelona and Real Madrid bad for La Liga?

For the past 2 seasons, we have been watching two of the world’s most dominant soccer teams destroying La Liga. Yes! Totally destroying La liga. Last season the competition between these two clubs were to an extent that both teams collected just short of 100 points. I’m sure all of us are going to watch the same scenario this season. Both teams are playing as though they are competing to see which team manages to lose less points to the rest of the teams. This makes the other teams look like they are playing in a lower division.

One of the factors which resulted in this domination started from Barcelona‘s famous academy, La Masia – the academy which produced the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi, among others. All three of them were nominated for the Ballon d’Or the same year. With the financial backing Real Madrid have, they have created one of the most expensive football team in the world. Although this created two extraordinary teams, it resulted in La Liga getting boring and very predictable.

Since the season La Liga was introduced, both these teams have emerged champions 51 times in 80 editions. Of course, the remaining 29 titles were won by other clubs, but do you think we can see that happening anytime soon? Not at all.

For the past 2 seasons, Barcelona have lost just 3 games, and one of that came when they had already confirmed the title. This clearly shows that some teams in La Liga had already given up, and some teams don’t even tend to attack when they are up against these teams. Last season Malaga introduced its reserve squad against Madrid just because they had an important match that week. And obviously Real took advantage and whacked them 7-0. It won’t be surprising if other teams follow Malaga’s “brilliant” technique.

If this situation continues,i’m sure it will effect La Liga’s credibility. These scenarios that will see a decrease in income and in the end cause La Liga’s downfall. It is obvious that La Liga is under crisis and its future doesn’t seem bright. Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of the biggest clubs in the world, but still, they need other clubs to develop. This situation might halt the players’ development because they are not challenged enough. Besides, the revenue both teams are earning from television broadcast is 3 times more than Atletico and Valencia. Not only that, it is also 10 times more than the other teams.

Spain’s football might be in its prime, but its league is clearly losing its credibility. It’s hard to imagine any other teams overtaking Barcelona or Real Madrid in the league for now, or maybe the next 10 years. Sometimes it’s sickening to see the same team finishing at the top every season and winning big week in, week out. Last season, C.Ronaldo finished as top scorer with 40 goals. This should have been an incredible achievement, but it’s not surprising as people were watching only two players competing for the golden boot.

This whole thing gives La Liga a bad image, and it’s inappropriate. La Liga is not meant only for Barcelona and Real Madrid, there are teams which have good players, but they are often overshadowed by these soccer giants. La Liga’s future is in danger, and this includes Real Madrid and Barcelona. The current situation which sees both these teams dominating the domestic league doesn’t bring any profit. For the sake of La Liga, these two teams have to stop their greediness, and with open hearts, receive an unbiased revenue. If not, let us all forget about La Liga.
