On 8th May 2013, the entire football world mourned the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. It was a loss too much to handle. Not only for Manchester United, but the entire football fraternity. Then came the speculation of who will be the Chosen One. After all the rumors, a manager with no experience in Europe was appointed to manage the Old Trafford Club.
With David Moyes taking charge, what seemed like the beginning of a new era has not started well. Following a disastrous transfer window, United’s start to the season was even worse. From 11 points in 8 games, the prospect of defending the title seems out of reach.
Its still early days in the premier league and i bet every united fan in his wildest dreams would want Fergie back. Moyes has been getting a lot of stick for United’s shaky start. Experts have criticised his methods and often described United’s style of play as “conservative” and “slow”.
What baffles me is that the fans’ lack of belief in their new manager. Fans who backed Fergie’s intuition when Moyes was appointed no longer support him. In these 4 months, Moyes has been the prey while the critics and the fans are hunting him down. Moyes may be the manager but he is not the one who is in the field.
United emerged domestic champions last year with the same team. The same team is struggling to get all 3 points this season. The difference is the manager who has spent 25 years in the same club and a manager who has just started his season with the club. Even if he does not end up winning anything this season, Moyes should have the time to deliver results.
The success of a manager is not only about winning titles, but also winning the faith of the club, faith of the fans. That has what has defined Manchester United over the years. Its something that our rivals don’t have. So ask yourselves, are you a true Manchester United fan?
