Uruguay Player Ratings against Argentina
Fernando Muslera - 7/10
Despite not being able to keep a clean sheet against Argentina, Fernando Muslera had a great game for Uruguay. The Galatasaray keeper made some vital saves to keep his side in contention till the last minute. If not for him, Argentina would have wrapped the game up earlier.
Matias Vina - 5.5/10
Matias Vina had a night to forget. He evidently struggled against the likes of Messi and De Paul. Vina lost ten duels throughout the game. He was schooled at the back and was not allowed any breathing space by Argentina.
Diego Godin - 6.5/10
Diego Godin had a decent game but struggled to contain Messi. The six-time Ballon d'Or winner gave Godin a hard time as he wiggled through tight spaces with ease. Messi's ball-control and acceleration troubled the 35-year-old throughout the game.
Jose Gimenez - 7/10
Jose Gimenez stood out for Uruguay at the back. The Atletico Madrid defender did well to contain Lautaro Martinez but was occasionally troubled by the brilliance of Lionel Messi. Gimenez made eight clearances, won seven duels and made six recoveries during the game.
Giovanni Gonzalez - 6/10
Giovanni Gonzalez performed his duties well at the back but lost his man on quite a few occasions, which opened up attacking avenues for Argentina. Offensively, he tried to whip in a few crosses, hoping to find one of Suarez or Cavani but could not.
Nicolas de la Cruz - 6/10
Nicolas de la Cruz had his moments against Argentina. The 24-year-old dominated against Molina but was unable to produce the desired result. De la Cruz tried getting into great goalscoring positions, but Martinez was always a step ahead of him.
Lucas Torreira - 7/10
Lucas Torreira was Uruguay's best player on the night. The 25-year-old won five duels, made six recoveries and won two tackles throughout the game. Torreira tried his level best to hold the midfield battle against Argentina without any support.
Rodrigo Bentancur - 5.5/10
Rodrigo Bentancur found no way through Argentina's midfield. The Uruguayan struggled to break through for the entirety of the game but found no success. He was eventually replaced by Nahitan Nandez in the second half.
Federico Valverde - 6.5/10
Federico Valverde was one of the positives for Uruguay against Argentina, putting in a massive shift. The Real Madrid midfielder covered a lot of ground relentlessly when not in possession. Valverde threatened every time he pulled clear and tried to create something for Uruguay whenever he got into an advanced position.
Luis Suarez - 5/10
Luis Suarez was isolated high up the pitch, and the Atletico Madrid striker failed to cause any trouble for Argentina. He was brilliantly shut down by the opposition as he failed to get even one shot on target.
Edinson Cavani - 5/10
Much like his counterpart, Edinson Cavani, too, did not have any real contribution in the game. Both he and Suarez failed to produce anything and also did not track back, which gave Argentina the numerical superiority in the centre of the park.
Ratings of Uruguay substitutes against Argentina:
Nahitan Nandez - 6/10
Nahitan Nandez could not produce anything substantial and failed to provide a big upgrade over Bentancur.
Matias Vecino - 6.5/10
Matias Vecino came on for Torreira in the 64th minute of the game. His introduction saw Uruguay take more charge down the centre. Vecino tried to overpower the tired legs.
Brian Ocampo - 5.5/10
Brian Ocampo could not influence proceedings against Argentina.
Facundo Torres - 6/10
Torres did not have much impact on the game.
Fernando Gorriaran - N/A
He came on too late in the game to earn a rating.
