Arsenal and Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes of their Round 3 FA Cup tie at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, January 12. However, the Red Devils won 5-3 on penalties to eliminate the Gunners from the competition.
Arsenal made a good start to the contest as they kept the ball for long spells and looked to draw Manchester United out onto them. However, the visitors were aware of this and defended cautiously, but did well to thwart the Gunners enough to prevent any chances from their end. With just four attempts in the first half despite 60% of the ball, the hosts failed to hit the target.
This played right into the hands of Manchester United, who struggled to make good of their limited possession too. With three shots in the first half, the Red Devils hit the target twice as they looked threatening going forward and breaking on the counter. However, neither side's efforts were any good as the two teams were deadlocked at 0-0 going into the half-time break.
The second half saw Manchester United make a stunning start as they grabbed the lead just seven minutes after the restart. Bruno Fernandes scored to make it 1-0 as Alejandro Garnacho provided an assist for the goal with a lovely pass. That goal breathed new life into the Red Devils, who looked a bit subdued.
However, their glee was short-lived as Diogo Dalot got sent off for two bookable offences shortly after. Immediately after his dismissal, Arsenal were awarded a free-kick and built upon it to create a goalscoring chance in the 63rd minute, which defender Gabriel Magalhaes converted perfectly.
Despite several chances for either side since that moment, neither Arsenal nor Manchester United could alter the scoreline. The match entered extra-time, with neither team looking solid enough to snatch a late win.
As a result, the match entered penalties. Manchester United did very well as they converted each of their five spot-kicks, while Kai Havertz missed for Arsenal while the other three scored. United went through, and on that note, let's take a look at the Gunners' player ratings.
