Chelsea Player Ratings
Kepa Arrizabalaga: 6/10
The Spanish keeper wasn’t called upon that much in this game. Arsenal dominated the first 35 minutes but wasn’t able to test the 25-year-old too often. Once his team took over, Arrizabalaga was effectively a passenger.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 7/10
Although he was asked to play two positions in one game, the captain led by example throughout the 90 minutes. Whilst under pressure, the 30-year-old organised his troops into a low-block, but once his team took over, Azpilicueta effectively led the attack from left-back.
Antonio Rüdiger: 6/10
Today wasn’t the German’s best game. Despite playing against an out of form Lacazette, Rüdiger still found himself left wanting at times.
Kurt Zouma: 6.5/10
Alongside a shaky Rüdiger, Zouma kept his composure and ensured his team shut out a fluid Arsenal attack. Across the game, the 25-year-old won 5 aerial duels, made 3 clearances and maintained a 90% pass accuracy.
Fikayo Tomori: 5.5/10
Due to the positioning of Emerson, Tomori was left exposed to the explosive pace of Nelson, in which he struggled against. After Chelsea switched to a back four, Tomori was asked to be a makeshift right-back, in which he struggled again. Subsequently, he was subbed off in the 59th minute for debutant Tariq Lamptey.
Emerson: 4/10
Taken off after 34 minutes, there’s not much to say about the Brazilian’s performance. Due to his positioning, Reiss Nelson was able to run in behind him on several occasions. If that wasn’t enough, Emerson lost Aubameyang for the first goal, allowing the Gabonese international to head home from close range.
N’Golo Kante: 6/10
Up against a rampant Özil, Kante found himself chasing shadows at time. Even in possession, Kante didn’t offer much creativity going forward either.
Matteo Kovačić: 7/10
The Croatian magician was once again pivotal in Chelsea’s ball retention. He alongside Jorginho was able to control the ball in the second half, as they constantly probed the Gunners defence. The 25-year-old’s influence can be seen through his completion of 41 passes.
Willian: 8/10
The Brazilian once again showed the world why he’s Chelsea’s best winger. His deft touches, body feints and whipped crosses were a constant threat to the out of position Saka. The 31-year-old completed 34 passes, 3 dribbles and created 7 chances, more than anyone else on the pitch.
Mason Mount: 6.5/10
The young Englishman has immensely impressed so far in his breakout season. At the Emirates, the 20-year-old grew into the game, pulling the strings in the final third.
Tammy Abraham: 7/10
Today, the 22-year-old scored his first goal against a ‘big 6’ team. Before that, Abraham had been in a dog fight, doing more off the ball than on it. In his hard-working performance, the striker won 6 aerial duels, only completed 9 passes but scored the all-important winner for the Blues.
Substitutions
Jorginho: 7.5/10
The substitution of Emerson for Jorginho completely changed the game. The mere presence of the former Napoli man on the pitch gave the Blues control of the game, penning Arsenal into their own half. The 28-year-old completed 89% of his 54 passes as he helped Chelsea to 57.9% of possession.
Calum Hudson-Odoi: 6/10
As the Blues were continuing to pile on the pressure, Lampard pulled for his ace card in Hudson-Odoi. This further pushed Arsenal back as the youngster consistently ran at Maitland-Niles.
Tariq Lamptey: 6/10
The 19-year-old made his PL debut today and didn’t look out of place for a minute. Of course, his team were already in the ascendancy, but Lamptey did well to stay composed as his team eventually wore down the Gunners.
