After managing to scrape to a fourth place finish last season, hopes were once again elevated at the Emirates ahead of the new season. This was of course, after Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis, during a Q & A session with fans, gloated about the club’s financial position to sign big players to challenge for titles ahead of the new season.
In a strange twist of fate, none of those scenarios have actually materialised. In fact, Arsenal only acquired the signature of French Under-20 star Yaya Sanogo.
The new English Premier League season kicked off for Arsenal unexpectedly with a shock loss at home to Aston Villa. In that same game, everything was exposed- Arsenal’s lack of quality and precision, and the dearth of a quality striker and defensive midfielder.
The defeat further compounded problems for Arsenal, as they struggled to cope with the pace of Villa’s front men, and also couldn’t convert their own chances.
After that disastrous start, here are three players who should be on Arsene Wenger’s emergency transfer list:
Ashley Williams (Swansea)
Arsenal definitely have problems in the defensive department; as good as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are, they are not the best pairing in the league.
In the opening game, Koscielny’s sending off coupled with a lack of defensive cover forced some of Arsenal’s players to play in unfamiliar positions.
The presence of Ashley Williams might just solve that predicament. The defender, who is the captain of both club and country, never fails to impress during match-days. His acquisition will not only bolster the Gunners’ defensive options, but also support the attack, as he is highly effective during set piece situations.
Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle United)
In the game against Villa, one got the feeling that Arsenal looked a bit clueless without Santi Cazorla in the midfield pack.
Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye could be the option to solve precisely such a problem.
He operates as a box-to-box midfielder and is described and admired by his manager and fans as a player who possesses “excellent vision, great ball control”, and “provides technical quality”.
Unfortunately, he won’t come cheap. But with Wenger certainly under pressure to sign (though he won’t admit), an improved bid for the player is likely to happen.
Michu (Swansea City)
With Giroud stating firmly that Arsenal need to sign a striker to support him upfront, it shows how much the players understand the current situation of the squad. Adding another striker would not only create competition in the attacking department, but also provide some much needed help for the Frenchman.
Spanish striker Michu who currently plays for Swansea City, banged in over 16 goals in his maiden season at the club. His acquisition would add more depth, competition, creativity and strength to the Gunner’s attacking options.
