Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen plays down Manchester United talks

Thomas Vermaelen denies any links with Manchester United

Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen has spoken up for the first time after heavy speculations that indicated his transfer to Manchester United.

The Belgian defender has denied any reports linking him with a move to Manchester United saying that he is only focused on Belgium's World Cup campaign.

New Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is in search of an experienced centre back and the Belgian International has been his prime target. With just one year left in his Arsenal contract, there were widespread reports saying that Vermaelen had agreed a personal deal with Manchester United and would complete the move once the two clubs finalise the fee.

But Vermaelen spoke to the media and clearly insisted that the statements were untrue.

He told Sky Sports News, "I know there has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours but the only thing I can say is that it's not true.”

“Everybody understands my situation at Arsenal and that I have one year left. I understand that people are going to talk but I am here in Brazil and I am enjoying my time and I'm focused on what I am doing."

Vermaelen also refused to comment on his talks with Arsene Wenger regarding his future at the club.

“We talk a lot when I am at Arsenal but it's not what I am going to discuss here, it is something you are going to have to ask him."
