Rumour: Arsenal considering bid for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina

Pepe Reina

Want away Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina could find himself with a new club soon as Arsenal are prepared to make a £5 million bid for him according to the Daily Mail.

Arsenal are without a capable second choice goalkeeper after Lukasz Fabianski moved to Swansea City and the club sees Reina as worthy competition to Wojciech Szczesny.

Reina may find himself in goal for Spain in their next game against Chile after current first choice keeper Iker Casillas let in five goals against the Netherlands in Friday’s fiasco.

The 31-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Napoli under former manager Rafael Benitez, had a stellar season with the Serie A club, famously saving a Mario Balotelli penalty and eventually helped the club to a third place finish.

Benitez is keen for Reina to spend another season on loan with the Naples outfit but Liverpool want any move for the Spaniard to be permanent which has put off Napoli. Brazilian stopper Rafael has impressed at Napoli and may very well be their first choice goalkeeper next season as the club want to spend their money to strengthen other areas.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger tried to bring Reina to the Emirates in 2010 and even offered £20 million for the keeper but Liverpool refused to do business with him. Reina has almost no chance of first team football at Liverpool as Simon Mignolet has firmly established himself as the number 1 keeper and may fancy a move to Arsenal.

Arsenal are also on the lookout for a striker and have set their sights on Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata and Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic.
