Arsenal suffered a humiliating loss to an injury Manchester United side on Sunday that has somewhat dented their title chances, Several fans were angry about the result and have accused the manager and the team fo their performances.
Bur Wenger wants them to support the team and not demoralize them. The 66-year-old said he has become immune to the complaints but he wants the supporters to be behind the team.
He said, “We need our fans to be behind the team [on Wednesday] night, because it's a very big game,” Wenger said. “You wonder sometimes, why the excessive reactions? Do people think football is just only winning, and never losing any game? It's part of football.”
Wenger was upset about the defeat but praised his team for their spirit and fight, something that most feel they lacked. This praise has angered the fans even more and they have hit out at Wenger for defending a stale performance.
But the long-serving manager will not let that get the better of him saying, “What makes me angry is to lose the game. That makes me angry and frustrated. But the reactions, I know now what to expect. When it's always the same, in the end you don't give too much importance to that, You become immune to it”
Of course, a lot of the reaction from fans were through social media whihc is the norm these days with people ranting and posting angry comments after the game. Luckily for the Frenchman he isn’t on social media. “I'm lucky because I don't go on Twitter, Life is not black and white. Life is nuanced,”
Arsenal are up for Tottenham fight
Wenger is closing in on completing 20 years as Arsenal manager and he has seen it all. With that experience in hand, Wenger is focused on the task ahead and still believes his team are in the fight for the title.
“What you want is to get the best out of the team until the end of the season and feel like this team gave absolutely the best in every single game until the end of the season. And after that, you want to win, but we will see who will win.”
Arsenal’s greatest rivals Spurs are currently above them in the league on a run of six straight wins but Arsenal have been in competition with their North London rivals several times before for league places and Wenger insists they will continue to do so this season.
“I think we have been consistently strong in the final part of the season. We did fight with Tottenham many times, We influence our future ourselves, not what people say. So let's focus on that”.
