Arsenal are set to break their own rules and offer Bacary Sagna a three-year contract to keep him at the club, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Gunners have a policy of not offering players aged 30 or over deals of two years or more but the French right-back wants a three-year contract.
Sagna’s current deal expires in the summer meaning he can can leave the club for free once the season has finished. Right now, he is free to talk to foreign clubs should he wish to but Arsenal’s league rivals, Manchester City, have already allegedly offered him a three-year contract.
As the fear of losing Sagna grows, it seems that Arsenal may have to budge on their initial rules over contract extensions as Sagna is currently one of their most important players.
Should they let him go to City in the summer, they will face strong criticism from the fans after previously allowing key players to join their rivals.
Wenger said: “He (Sagna) has an offer, he has not come back to us yet. That (City offer) cannot be right because it’s illegal.
“I’m confident he will stay but we will accept his decision. No matter what his decision will be, we will accept it and go on with it.”
Sagna has won 93 headed duels in the Premier League this season.
