Manchester United legend David Beckham has passionately defended under-fire manager Arsene Wenger on social media website Instagram after several Arsenal fans held up a banner during matches requesting him to leave.
The former England international has faced Wenger’s side many times as a United player and has huge respect for him. On Instagram, there was an image posted by an account called arsenal_worldwide which showed a banner held up by a set of Arsenal fans at the Emirates which read ‘Arsene, Thanks for the memories but it’s time to say goodbye’.
The caption for the image read ‘Disgraceful or Truthful?’ asking users to give their view on the topic. David Beckham was one of those users and he was clearly unhappy with the fans who displayed the banner.
He commented on the post from his official Instagram account saying “Disgraceful … No respect attention seekers.” The banner has become a common sight in several of Arsenal’s games as a certain section of fans show their displeasure quite openly.
But United’s former No 7 clearly does not agree with such displays of hatred towards the manager. Here’s the post from Instagram:
David Beckham trained with Arsenal on two occasions during the off-season period of the MLS in USA. He spent time at their training ground to keep up his fitness levels during his last year as a player before he moved to Paris Saint-Germain.
Beckham retired from football at the age of 38 coming on as a substitute in his last game for PSG. He won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League during his 10 years with the Manchester United first team. He famously moved to Real Madrid in 2003 and won a La Liga trophy in his four years.
Arsenal face almost impossible task in Spain
Wenger might have lost three home games in a row for the first time since 2002 but he will have to put that behind him and focus on the match against Barcelona. The Catalans already have a 2-0 advantage after beating the Gunners in the first leg making it an all the more unlikely task at the Camp Nou.
But Wenger’s team have come close to overturning a first-leg deficit before after they came agonizingly close against Bayern Munich in 2013 losing on the away goals rule. The second leg will be played on Wednesday night before they face a trip to Everton next weekend.
