What's the story?
TMW claim that Ajax Director of Football Marc Overmars has reached an agreement with Arsenal to leave his club with the Eredivisie side at the end of the season and join the setup at the Emirates.
In case you didn't know...
Overmars is no stranger to North London, spending three years at Arsenal between 1997 and 2000, making 124 appearances and scoring 33 goals, but the Dutchman has made a name for himself back in Holland as the Director of Football of Ajax.
The heart of the matter
Under the Dutchman's watchful eye over the last five years, Ajax reached the Europa League final last season and remain a perennial contender in the Eredivisie.
The 44-year-old has helped recruit some of the world’s top talents to the club in recent seasons, namely Davinson Sanchez who became Tottenham’s record signing in the summer and Kasper Dolberg, who is regarded as one of the best young strikers in Europe.
What's next?
While it’s not stated what kind of role Overmars will take at Arsenal, one can only assume it will be a similar role with similar responsibilities to the one he’s excelled at with Ajax in recent years.
If reports are to be believed, Arsenal have been looking for someone to fill this role for a little while now.
Author's take
Over the last couple of years, Arsenal fans have been calling out for the club to appoint a Director of Football, or something similar, to prevent the club from regressing in the way it has over the last few years - and it appears those calls may finally be answered.
Having a former player back, who knows the club as well as Overmars does, could be a shrewd move. Especially given his previous successes.
