Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has demanded that his teammates learn from their 5-1 defeat to Liverpool and respond adequately by beating Manchester United on Wednesday.
Szczesny was outspoken in his embarrassment after the humiliating defeat at Anfield on Saturday, with Arsenal having gone 4-0 down inside the first 20 minutes of the game, apologising to the fans for the result and performance alike.
The Polish stopper has now called upon his colleagues to pull themselves together, put the defeat behind them and respond appropriately by getting back on track against beleaguered Manchester United at the Emirates.
Szczesny told reporters, “We represent one of the biggest clubs in the world and what we did early on is not acceptable.
“We said that at half-time, we went out in the second half with a different attitude and it was much more of an even game.
“But as I said, we will learn our lesson from this and respond quickly against Manchester United.”
Per Mertesacker echoed those comments and insisted that the players were all pumped and ready to bounce back against the Red Devils.
“The way we performed at Anfield was just not good enough for this level.
“It was one of our worst set-backs of the season and now we have the opportunity to respond quickly against United – and we have to make sure we do that.”
Despite criticism of their defeat to Liverpool leading to some writing off their title chances, Arsenal could go back to the top of the table if they beat United and Chelsea fail to overcome West Brom on Tuesday evening.
Wojciech Szczesny has made 77 successful catches this season, more than any other goalkeeper in the top half of the table.
