Arsenal: Why the trophy drought is ending for sure

In what news would come as music to the ears of Arsenal fans, the club revealed yet another striker who will feature in the red and white kit next season.

Olivier Giroud, top scorer with French Champions Montepellier, will now add more ammunition to the already loaded up Gunners side. He is now the second striker to move to the Emirates following in the footsteps of the German International, Lukas Podolski. While the latter has a lot of experience in club as well as International football, the former has left no stone unturned in his quest to be noticed, rising from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1 and now to the most prized league in the world.

But at the same time, this springs concerns in our mind. Two top class strikers? Does that mean Van Persie is leaving? Well we can’t answer that right now and with the Dutch out of the Euros, we could expect an answer to it in a few days time. But while negative thoughts may clog up our mind, it could also be that Van Persie requested for assistance upfront if he was to be made to stay and maybe that’s why two quick summer signings have taken place, which is not what Le Professor usually does.

Last summer, saw most of our signings completed during the last few days of the transfer period and Mikel Arteta in fact, saw his deal go through on Deadline day. These two vital signings could prove to be the game changers in our quest for silverware. Still we would have fans who would say we need a attacking midfielder or a defensive one, but in my opinion, I would stand by Wenger if he doesn’t look around in the transfer market too much now.

The reason being, last season, we saw many new heroes step into the limelight. Koscielny, who was condemned for his Carling Cup mishap the previous season, turned out to be one of the best defenders of the season, joining Bacary Sagna who was undoubtedly one of the best right backs. Vermaelen, in no way showed that he was a centrehalf, making his way to the scoresheet when the situation asked for it. Gibbs and Santos can be pardoned for not really standing out as they both had injury problems and never got a real chance to recover.

Alex Song, with his ever so delightful chips and Arteta, settling into the team in his debut season itself have impressed all. Rosicky, after an injury prone spell, who in my opinion was always underrated, stepped out and proved his critics wrong with excellent displays in every game. And about Wilshere, I don’t think I need to say anything about his abilities. Even Ramsey’s poor run of form cannot be targetted as he has tremendous potential and maybe it’s just the pressure that gets to him sometimes.

Though Walcott and Gervinho worked hard to assist Van Persie, who was in tremendous form ending as the league’s top scorer, the main problem with the team was in its attacking options. Maybe it was a dry patch, because noone doubts the two wingers abilities, but at this level, there is no scope for error. The days the team did’nt strike the right chord together, looking at the substitutes wasn’t a thing that helped much. Other than the Ox and Thierry Henry of course, for the loan spell, no one who came off the bench was really able to act as a game changer.

But now, with Giroud and Podolski added to the ranks, that problem should be solved. Not only will it boost the team’s firepower but will also put pressure on the underperformers to work hard and fight for their place in the playing XI.

With significant departures last season, the club has managed to challenge for all trophies realistically and impressed one and all with their style of football and commitment, finishing 3rd on the table beating rivals Tottenham to the task and stealing the title “Comeback Kings” from Sir Alex’s side. And now, with such a quality team at Wenger’s disposal, it would’nt be a surprise to see that trophy drought coming to an end really soon and for all you know, we maybe looking at another set of “Invincibles”.
