Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil broke a Premier League record last night when he provided the assist for the Gunners’ equaliser against Tottenham Hotspurs in the North London derby on Sunday. The German international became the first player in England’s top-flight to assist a goal in six consecutive games.
The 27-year-old played a delightful ball from the right-wing for teammate Kieran Gibbs to bundle in an equaliser and secure a vital 1-1 draw against their fiercest rivals Spurs at the Emirates Stadium.
The German midfielder has endured two difficult seasons in the Premier League and he has come under criticism by many experts for ‘not covering enough blades of grass’ during matches. However, Ozil, often seen as a languid figure on the pitch, looks to have finally found his feet and he is enjoying the best form of his life since joining the North London club from Real Madrid in 2013 for £42.5 million.
The former Schalke talisman has been instrumental in the Gunners’ success this season and he is finally doing what he’s good at – assisting goals for his teammates. He is known as the ‘assist king’ for a reason and last night, he silenced his critics and set a new record in the Premier League.
Former Arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas also assisted a goal in six consecutive Premier League appearances, but his achievement was spread over spells with Arsenal and Chelsea that were separated by three years.
Ozil has helped his side to five wins and a draw across those six matches and they remain joint-top of the domestic league, trailing rivals Manchester City only on goal difference. His sequence began in the 5-2 away win against Leicester City in which he provided teammate Alexis Sanchez with an assist to help him score his second goal of the match and his ball for Gibbs’ goal last night made it six in a row.
With this new record, the former Madrid playmaker is setting new benchmarks for other Premier League players and he also has the best games/assist rate in Premier League history, averaging one assist every 2.71 matches.
