Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his side’s 2-0 away win at Bayern Munich in last season’s UEFA Champions League was a turning point in their results away from home. The win wasn’t enough as the Gunners bowed out of the Champions League in the Round of 16 due to the away goals rule but Wenger’s men have won nine away games on the trot since.
The win at Bayern Munich came following a 3-1 thumping at the hands of the Bavarians in the first leg. Between the first and second legs Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup at home by Blackburn and lost the North London derby away to bitter rivals Tottenham.
Arsenal travel to France on Wednesday to take on Marseille at the Stade Velodrome and Wenger was full of praise for his side regarding their away form:
“What happened that night is that we were in a position where we were expected to be hammered and everyone predicted a six or seven-nil,” he told Arsenal Player.
“We had nothing to lose, we decided to go for it and realised after the game we were very close to knocking them out.
“Overall, I believe even last season we had a decent away record and from that moment you think, ‘If we can go to Munich and win, why not anywhere else?’”
