Arsene Wenger reveals the best position of Arsenal’s £15m Whizkid

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praised the club’s match-winner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for his goal scoring display in the club’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, telling reporters that he is confident that the young midfield player will continue to thrive in the central midfielder position in which he operated against the Eagles.

The 20 year old missed the start of the season due to a knee problem, but scored twice on his first start since his return to send Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League table.

“It was a great day for him because he was out for a long time and we needed to be patient to get him back to full fitness and competitiveness,” said Wenger.

“He had a great game today, scored two goals and showed that [central midfield] is an interesting position for him.”

Wenger continued by reasserting his belief that the former Southampton man, who has featured both centrally and as a wide player, will eventually play as a central midfielder for the club.

“He can play – I believe- both wide and centrally,” said Wenger.

“Certainly in a few years he will be a central midfielder. He has that surge of power that in the modern game is so vital.”

“When you close down [all the] time you need that power to come from deep. It is important and he used it very well today.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain scored his first goals of the season against Palace and Wenger believes that he is a better finisher than he gives himself credit for.

“He’s a good finisher and of course I hope that adds some confidence, because he is not always convinced that he is a good finisher, so I am glad he scored today.

Having missed the first half of the season through injury the midfielder is returning at a key time for the club, with Wenger admitting that he may be fresher than his teammates.

“He has not had 35 games like some of his partners he has had maybe five so that will help him.”
