Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has compared striker Robin van Persie to a 39-year-old woman wanting a baby.
The Dutchman moved to Manchester United last summer after spending eight years with Arsenal, winning just a FA Cup medal. And the man responsible for bringing him to England believes time was running out for Robin and he wanted to win a Premier League trophy as long as he was at his prime. Speaking to the reporters, Wenger said:
“Yes, I know the amount he is being paid per week at Old Trafford! We could not compete because it is on a scale that is massive.
“He’s an honest guy, Robin. He got to 29 and thought, ‘Can we win the Championship here or do I have more chances somewhere else?’ There’s a kind of timescale like for a woman who has no baby at 39. She starts to think, ‘I have not much time left’.”
Van Persie has proved to be a great addition to Sir Alex’s side and has been in a rampant form this season, scoring 24 goals in the Premier League. His goals have got him a PFA Player of the Year nomination but Wenger believes it’s Van Persie’s teammate Michael Carrick (also shortlisted) who deserves the award. He added:
“Sometimes not only should the goalscorer be rewarded but the real players in the heart of the game.
“Carrick, for me, deserves it. He is a quality passer. He could play for Barcelona. He would be perfectly suited to their game.”
Meanwhile, Wenger confirmed his side will give a guard of honour to the newly crowned Premier League champions when the two sides meet later tonight despite protests from some section of fans.
