Khedira will add solidarity to the defensive framework
In the 2013-14 season, Wenger broke the bank to sign Mesut Ozil for a record 42.5 million pounds, which proved to be quite a good deal for the club. Gunners were highly criticized for their low spending attitude that resulted in signing players with a future perspective, but that changed with the signing of Ozil last season. This season having already completed the signing of Alexis Sanchez in the forward line Wenger is now looking to strengthen his midfield with Khedira. However, for a deal to work with Khedira it would need Wenger to break the bank yet again, not due to his transfer value but concerning his wages.
Arsenal in the previous season have been many a times left in awe of the opposition attackers, especially against the teams in the top three playing away conceding 17 goals in just three fixtures. Arsenal’s defensive midfield is ageing Arteta, 32, Flamini, 30, have entered the phase of their footballing careers where their pace and stamina would start to decrease. While the likes of Wilshere, Ramsey & Oxlade Chamberlain are players who like to attack the ball more often with their forward runs and thus end-up leaving a gap in defensive midfield.
Khedira, 27, is entering his prime years in football having already played in the Bundesliga, La Liga and is also a key member of the German National Team; he brings in a wealth of experience to share with the youngsters at the club. He is no goal machine, but he is immensely capable of stopping the opposition attackers from taking control of the game and scoring goals adding solidarity to the defensive framework.
Arsenal will have a formidable presence in midfield since Patrick Viera
Arsenal has been missing such formidable presence in the midfield ever since the departure of Patrick Viera, although Alex Song provided some solidarity during his stay at the club but was never a man who could run forward to score goals. Khedira is the type of player who could replace the likes of Viera which was expected out of Diaby, but his injuries forced him out for almost his entire career at the club.
Wenger must go for the likes of a player who is capable of using the ball and is multi-faceted to suit the style of play at the club and Khedira fits the requirement. However, he has been used more as a defensive midfielder for the Spanish Giants but has been vastly successful as a box-to-box midfielder for the German National Team. He is very much the type of player who can help force control over the game or shut things down when they are going out of hand. He is strong and will certainly bring in something extra if he does sign.
Khedira offers a bit of everything that Arsenal need at this point, he is proactive in his defensive work, does not stand and wait for things to happen. He gets involved in the game and is pretty much of an all-action midfield player. He can even score a few goals and has a gift of timing his runs well. He can readily link-up with Ozil having done so for Real Madrid in the past as well as for Germany. The already present German contingent at the club would make him feel like home and that should reduce down the time he would take to settle in at Arsenal.
He may not be the blue eyed boy for the club but he sure will be a hero whose efforts would be seen on the field and sometimes may even end up as the unsung hero but his presence will add to the squad in every way possible.
Breaking the Bank for a player of his calibre and stature might not be such a bad deal at the end of the day.
