Chelsea defender Ashley Cole is all set to become the highest paid defender in the world after signing a one-year contract extension worth £200,000 a week with the London club. The deal has been agreed on, and they are expected to announce it ahead of Wednesday’s Capital One Cup clash against Swansea.
Cole’s agents did have tentative talks with Real Madrid, Paris St Germain and Manchester United, but Chelsea finally gave in to Cole’s demands. They finally decided to hand the left-back a deal, as it would’ve cost the club well over £15 million to secure a suitable replacement for the English defender.
Cole was all set to leave the club, as Rafa Benitez had announced earlier regarding the futures of Cole and team-mate Frank Lampard, who’s stay at club looks set to end this season. Lampard has been linked with a move to MLS side LA Galaxy.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was convinced to authorize the extension of Cole, after Ryan Bertrand’s failure to progress this season. A major announcement was to be made after Chelsea’s poor home form under Rafael Benitez, in the hope that it would lift the spirit of the club and its supporters.
