Aston Villa play host to Brighton & Hove Albion in a Premier League game at Villa Park this Monday. Just two points separate these teams, with Aston Villa in ninth on 28 points and Brighton one spot below them in 10th. However, neither side have been in the best form recently.
So, which of these Europe-chasing sides will come out on top in the Midlands?
Aston Villa vs Brighton & Hove Albion Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- Aston Villa's recent record against Brighton is a very strong one. In their last six meetings, they've only lost to the Seagulls once, although that defeat did come in their most recent clash. However, the last time Brighton visited Villa Park, they were on the wrong end of a 6-1 hammering.
- After going winless in the league from October 26 to December 1, Aston Villa's form appeared to have turned a corner when they beat Brentford and Southampton in back-to-back games. Since then, though, they've lost two of their last three, and looked devoid of ideas in their Boxing Day loss to Newcastle.
- Brighton's form coming into this game has been even more concerning. Fabian Hurzeler's side have failed to win any of their last six league games, and have plummeted from 4th to 10th during the sequence.
- Brighton's biggest issue appears to be in front of goal. Their winless six-game run has only seen them score six goals, and top scorer Danny Welbeck has now not found the net since October 26.
- Aston Villa, meanwhile, will come into this game without striker Jhon Duran. The Colombian was sent off under controversial circumstances against Newcastle, but an appeal against his red card has failed, meaning he will sit out for three matches.
Aston Villa vs Brighton & Hove Albion Prediction
These teams are relatively well-matched, both on paper and in terms of recent form, too, making it a tight game to predict.
However, Aston Villa have the home advantage, and Unai Emery's recent record against Brighton is excellent, having not lost to them at Villa Park since 2020.
Given Brighton's current issues in front of goal, it's hard to see them claiming a positive result here, with young boss Fabian Hurzeler perhaps needing to wait until 2025 - and their next home game - for the tide to turn.
The prediction, therefore, is a tight home win.
Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion
