Chelsea and Atletico Madrid could face each other in the semi-final of the Champions League and the dilemma that Atletico face is whether they can play Chelsea’s on loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois against the Blues if they draw the Premier League side on Friday.
Courtois has been on loan for three seasons now and has a chance to play his parent club – but it will come at a price.
A clause inserted in the loan deal by Chelsea means that the Spanish side will have to pay the Blues €3 million per game. So if Courtois is to play both legs, Atletico Madrid will have to pay Chelsea €6 million for both legs.
That is an amount that Atletico Madrid are not willing to pay and it was also confirmed by Atletico president Enrique Cerezo: “If we draw Chelsea, Courtois won’t play. It is a figure we cannot pay,”
Although this may hurt Atletico Madrid’s chances if they draw Chelsea, it might be worth the gamble if they are to meet Chelsea in the final considering the rewards they would get if they were to win the trophy.
