Champions of the first season of the Indian Super League, Atletico de Kolkata, have signed Portuguese striker Helder Postiga from Deportivo la Coruna as their marquee player for the second edition of the Indian Super League. Many names such as Freddie Kanoute, Aleksandar Hleb, Milan Baros and Andrey Arshavin were pitched to sign for the Kolkata side, but the club revealed the signing of Postiga through their official Twitter account today.
The player has played previously for Porto, Sporting Lisbon, Tottenham Hotspur and Spanish sides Valencia, Real Zaragoza and Deportivo and has represented his national side 71 times, netting 27 times in the process. It is still unclear whether last season’s marquee player Luis Garcia will be back to play for the Kolkata-based club.
Postiga becomes the second Portuguese player to be a marquee signing for an Indian Super League side this season after NorthEast United FC signed Simao Sabrosa earlier. The striker was fundamental to Portugal’s qualifying campaign for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, as he helped the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portuguese side by scoring a total of 6 six goals in the run-up to the tournament.
Postiga brings in experience and a proven champion to the ISL having won the UEFA Cup, Intercontinental Cup, 2 Portuguese League titles with FC Porto and he was also part of the Portuguese team that finished runners-up at the 2004 UEFA European Championships.
