SCORERS: Atletico Madrid - Fernando Torres 42' 60'; Eibar - Kike 35' Ruben Pena 70'
Atletico Madrid played their final game of the campaign at home as the 10th placed Eibar travelled to the Wanda Metropolitano to take on the recently crowned Europa League Champions. Antoine Griezmann sat out the start of the match and made way for one of the biggest names in Spanish football, Fernando Torres, to play his final game for the Rojiblancos.
Eibar threatened to spoil the party by taking the lead, but two goals from the man in question and a stunner by Pena meant that both teams shared the spoils.
In a match filled with goals, cards and emotions, we dug up three major takeaways from the game:
#3 Red card fiasco
A third red card in seven matches, after they went down to ten men at the Emirates in the semi-finals of the Europa League, and then against Alaves in the league threw a spanner in the works after Atleti had managed to get back on level terms following the opener from Alavez.
The Argentine manager has often come under fire for the aggressive, "all-or-nothing" philosophy he has ingrained in his players. It's fair to say that comes through in the tackling as well, which again, on the night, cost them two points.
It might've not mattered in the end, as they held on to second spot in the league, but Simeone needs to address the disciplinary aspect of his side and not deny the existence of the problem which is corroborated by the evidence. Lucas Hernandez the latest culprit in that regard.
#2 Eibar unlock one of the best defences in Europe, twice
The side from Madrid have built their reputation firmly on the foundation of their impressive defensive record. Under Diego Simeone, the Rojiblancos have become one of the most water-tight defences going around in world football.
It is a record that is reflected by their performances at home this season. After beating Arsenal, Atletico had now gone 12 consecutive games without conceding a goal at the Wanda Metropolitano.
What the Spanish side hasn't been able to reconcile with their imperious home record is the one they have when they travel.
Atletico have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 9 games on the trot away from home before their latest trip to Getafe. Even with one of the most talented men with gloves in world football at the moment in Jan Oblak in their ranks, they have struggled to replicate their defensive performances at home on the road.
On the night, we got to witness the two extremes of their contrasting defensive displays as they stood firm on occasions and perished on the some and ended up conceding 2 goals in as many matches in their final sprint in the league after they did so against Espanyol.
#1 Fernando Torres scores twice in the final game for his boyhood club
The significance of the moment was huge. Fernando Torres after have set sail for the seven seas and returning to his boyhood club, his home, Atletico Madrid is nothing short of a fairytale ending.
After spending so many seasons getting berated by the fans and pundits alike in England, El Nino finally set foot in his native Spain. He is now, again, heralded by his own and given the special treatment form the press. Hard to say he doesn't deserve it.
On the night, the man stepped up and score a brace in his bow-out game for the Spanish side. The place where it all began. The place where it all ends. Good riddance Fernando! Thanks for the memories.
