Atletico Madrid kick off their 2016/17 La Liga campaign on the back of a superb season that ended on a heart-breaking note, with Los Rojiblancos in the title race until the second-last fixture of the season, while losing out to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final on penalties, which meant Atletico could not add to their 10 La Liga titles nor pick up their first Champions League trophy.
With Diego Simeone confirming his future with the club in addition to superstars like Antoine Griezmann also signing new contracts, Atletico Madrid will face the 2016/17 season with new optimism. The Rojiblancos begin their campaign against newly-promoted sides Deportivo Alaves and CD Leganes, which provides them with an easy start to the season, although Celta Vigo might provide them a stern test in Gameday 3.
Atletico’s first blockbuster of the season comes early, when they travel to the Camp Nou to face off against FC Barcelona on the 21st of September, 2016 in Gameday 5, with the reverse fixture on 26th February, 2017.
The Madrid derby takes place well into the season, with Atletico hosting the first Madrid derby against Real Madrid in the Vicente Calderon on the 20th of November, 2016. The return fixture has the potential to be pivotal, coming with only 7 games left in the season on the 9th of April.
If La Liga goes into the last day of the season, Atletico Madrid face a tough task, as they end their La Liga campaign hosting Athletic Bilbao on the 21st of May, 2017.
