What’s the story?
It is not a common sight to see players from Atletico Madrid join Real Madrid directly. It is, however, not for the lack of trying as Atletico superstar and World Cup winner Lucas Hernandez has claimed that he rejected a great offer from Real Madrid two years ago.
In case you didn’t know…
Real Madrid don’t usually sign players from Atletico Madrid but they made an exception when they acquired the signature of Lucas Hernandez’s brother Theo Hernandez in 2017.
Since then, while Lucas Hernandez has gone on to achieve some great things in his career, Theo Hernandez’s graph has taken a nosedive. The fact that Lucas Hernandez has been linked with the likes of Premier League giants Manchester United speaks volumes about his development.
Heart of the matter…
Speaking in an interview, Lucas Hernandez revealed that the Galacticos had put forth an “important” offer for him two years ago. However, he didn’t even consider looking at it because of his allegiance with Atletico Madrid.
“I can only answer that many things have been said and written, but what is really true is that two summers ago, Real Madrid made an important offer to my representative,” he said.
“But I told them that I did not want to know anything about that offer on the table. Everyone knows how much I owe to Atlético de Madrid.”
“I am a footballer who has grown up in the Atlético de Madrid Academy, I have grown up here and I am very grateful to them for everything. As for Real Madrid, I could not even consider that possibility.”
What’s next?
Real Madrid’s interest in Lucas Hernandez is something that has almost always been talked of. And while they have been successful at luring his brother Theo to the Santiago Bernabeu, it seems unlikely that they would ever be able to bring in the France international to the club in the near future.
