After helping his side progress to the last eight of the Copa del Rey, Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres said that the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu wasn't as taxing a game as everyone thought it would be, considering that his side had already gained a crucial 2-0 lead in the first leg.
The 30-year-old scored twice, in the first minute of both the halves, and those goals all but ended the home side’s hopes of staging a comeback.
"We must enjoy this. It was a nice game, although I have had happier days at Atletico. I feel at 200 percent. I am very happy. It was a game in which we felt comfortable due to the result in the first game. The goal so early meant we could play the game we wanted to. We never saw the tie was in danger, we were never feeling worried," the Spaniard told Canal Plus.
Happy to score at the Bernabeu: Torres
Torres also said that it was very satisfying from a personal point of view to have scored at a venue where he didn't have the best of records prior to the game. He also thanked his teammate Antoine Griezmann for helping set him up for both the goals.
"The smile was as we were winning, and for scoring my first two goals. And even more for having done it at a stadium where I had never scored before. To play at the Bernabeu is difficult. When they scored they thought they had a chance, but the 1-2 meant we were close to going through," the former Chelsea man said.
"Today I finished [the goals] well, but it was thanks to Griezmann. We must let him grow. He is a very important player for us and will be even more in the future. We must enjoy it with him, and let him grow," he added.
