Bafetimbi Gomis has revealed that he used popular computer game Football manager to study his teammates at Swansea City after signing for the Welsh club in the summer of 2014. The Frenchman who joined Swansea from Lyon admits that he used to play the game since his youth team days at Saint-Etienne and that he used the game to try and find out more about his new teammates after completing the move.
“I played at Lyon for five years and there we played (Football Manager) a lot,” he said. “And then I came to Swansea. After signing the contract, I went on holiday and took the game with me."
"If you have the latest game each player comes with a picture. So I started studying all my new teammates. Their names, where the played before, their position on the pitch. I studied their stats, if they were goalscorers or more assist men. It helped me a lot."
Gomis loving Swansea involvement
The 30-year-old striker scored in the first four league matches for Swansea this campaign but could only add a single goal in his next 14 appearances, which takes his tally to 5 goals in 18 appearances for the Welsh club this season. However, the striker admits that he is loving life at South wales and that he finds a lot of time to play Football Manager due to the wet weather in Swansea.
“People are very welcoming, very warm,” he said of the people in South Wales. “But then it's true that it rains a lot here and you end up staying indoors more often. So I have got more time to spend playing Football Manager.”
“Sometimes my wife gets a bit annoyed!” he added.
Swansea had a decent start to the 2015-16 campaign with two wins and two draws in their first four fixtures of the campaign including a famous win against Manchester United at the Liberty stadium. However, the Swans failed to register a single win in their next five league outings and now find themselves without a win in their last 7 league games and are currently in 18th position, flirting with relegation.
Their inability to score goals after the first few games have also resulted in the sacking of manager Garry Monk. The goal against Manchester City must have lifted Gomis’ hopes and the Welsh club will need the striker to fire if they are to secure safety.
