Luka Modric has been the best player for most of the year. However, the last 2-3 months have been way below par. The Croatian was given a different role by Julen Lopetegui in the team and that has not only cost the manager his job, it's also cost the midfielder a Ballon d'Or!

Modric lifted the Champions League with Real Madrid and also took Croatia to the World Cup final. That got him the UEFA Best Player of the Year award and also The Best FIFA Men's Player award but sadly, he won't be the recipient of the Ballon d'Or.
Had the voting for the France Football award ended in September, Modric would have been the runaway winner but in the last 2-3 months, others have outperformed him tremendously.
