Barcelona and Real Madrid the most popular teams in the world, new study reveals

Spanish football has emerged the world leader when it comes to attracting fans via the social media. A comprehensive study of “followers” on the two leading social media channels, Facebook and Twitter, has shown that FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two most popular teams on the planet.

The graphic shown below gives a snap view of positions and numbers. It is in Spanish but it needs no real translation, plus other teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea do feature in the list. The non-football team that ranks highest in the list is Los Angeles Lakers.

This study clearly shows the widespread appeal of Spanish football and the strength of the fan base for Real Madrid and Barcelona.
